Who is Wonder Woman?
A Look at One of DC’s Finest
By Laura Domholt

Who is Wonder Woman? For 68 years she has stood as a symbol for peace, knowledge, love, and respect for millions around the globe. She is a princess, an ambassador, a warrior, and a time-honored heroine.
Her look has seen many changes over the years, but her message of peace has stayed true through the numerous challenges and hardships she has faced along the way. There is so much more than her look, though, that speaks to who she is.
Wonder Woman first burst onto the scene in All Star Comics #8 (December 1941) thanks to creator William Moulton Marston. Moulton, inventor of an early predecessor to the polygraph test, was striving to create a new superhero, one who would have "all the strength of Superman plus all the allure of a good and beautiful woman." In less than a year, she had her own self-titled comic book; a first for super-heroines. Hers is the third longest running comic in history, next to fellow Justice League members Superman and Batman. In 1972, she graced the first cover of Gloria Steinem’s Ms. Magazine.
Diana, the original Wonder Woman, was a blessing from the Gods above to Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. After millennia on Themyscira, she deeply longed for a child. Per the gods’ instructions, she formed a baby from clay which the gods then breathed life into. She was made "beautiful as Aphrodite, wise as Athena, stronger than Hercules, and swifter than Hermes." Her other divine gifts include the ability to fly, the ability to communicate with and calm a plethora of animals and creatures, and the ability to transform from unsuspecting civilian to costumed Wonder Woman.
The immortal Amazons are dedicated to the ideals of peace and harmony, but are also skilled and fierce warriors, ready to protect their sisters when necessary. Wonder Woman is no exception. She is skilled with a bow and arrow, martial arts, sword-fighting, and hand-to-hand combat, and stays at the top of her game by sparring with fellow Justice League members such as Superman.
In addition to her numerous physical gifts, Wonder Woman was also bestowed with a variety of tools to aid her mission. The god Hephaestus fashioned her inimitable Lasso of Truth from the Golden Girdle of Gaea, as well as her bullet-proof bracelets from the shards of Zeus’s Aegis. Her golden tiara can also be used as a lethal boomerang. Wonder Woman possesses gleaming ceremonial battle armor with a protective shield and god-given sword. And of course, she has the legendary Invisible Jet, crafted from alien Lansanarian technology.
Diana is by far the most well-known and by far the longest serving bearer of the Wonder Woman mantle, but through the years other heroines have also carried the responsibility. Diana’s Amazon sister, Artemis, won the title of Wonder Woman
after winning Queen Hippolyta’s contest to choose a new Wonder Woman. Artemis met an untimely death at the hands of the White Magician, passing the role back
to Diana.
After Diana’s tragic death, her mother, the highly esteemed Queen Hippolyta, served as Wonder Woman, traveling back in time to aid the Allies in World War II. Ultimately, Hippolyta returned to the present to find Diana resurrected and ceded the title back to her daughter. For a period of time, Diana reconsidered whether or not she was worthy enough to hold the title of Wonder Woman, and her sister Donna Troy took over. In the end, Donna passed the title back to the one true Wonder Woman, Diana. Fellow Amazon Orana held the title very briefly, and Cassandra Sandsmark, Wonder Girl, became Wonder Woman in an alternate future.
Wonder Woman’s adventures have been seen across the globe in a variety of media, first and foremost, in her own comic book. Over the years, there have been more than 500 Wonder Woman comic books between three major runs. She has been seen in numerous comic book publications in addition to her own book, including Justice League of America, 52, Infinite Crisis, and Identity Crisis, just to name a few. There have been a variety of Wonder Woman books published as well, guide books and novels alike.
In 1975, Lynda Carter debuted as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in The New Original Wonder Woman on ABC. After an unsuccessful attempt at a Wonder Woman television movie starring Cathy Lee Crosby, the network was reluctant to sign on another show. However, with this new series, the writers wanted to be truer to the comic book. All the pieces began to fall into place.
In 1975, Lynda Carter debuted as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in The New Original Wonder Woman on ABC. While the series did take liberties with Wonder Woman’s story, it strived to maintain her message of peace. Ironically, Lynda Carter had auditioned for the role of Wonder Woman in the previous Wonder Woman movie with Cathy Lee Crosby.
Just this year, Warner Bros. Animation released a direct-to-DVD animated Wonder Woman movie. The film starred Keri Russell as the voice of Wonder Woman, with Nathan Fillion voicing her counterpart Steve Trevor. Other members of the star-studded cast included Alfred Molina, Rosario Dawson, Oliver Platt, Marg Helgenberger, and Virginia Madsen. George Perez’s seven issue comic book story arc was a prominent influence for the film’s story, although there were significant differences as well. Warner Bros. is still working at releasing a full-length Wonder Woman feature film, but they have yet to decide on a script.
Wonder Woman has even found her place in high fashion. In 2008, renowned fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg launched a Wonder Woman inspired line of fashions and accessories; the collection was quite limited and well received by Hollywood stars, such as Paris Hilton. In addition to the fashion line, DVF also released her own comic book entitled, "Be the Wonder Woman You Can Be," and featured heroines Diva, Viva, and Fifa. Her message was simple, "We all have a Wonder Woman inside us."
Above all else, Wonder Woman is a complex symbol and inspiration to countless people around the world. She is built upon a strong foundation of moral values, but still follows the paradox of being a warrior campaigning for peace. Her mission to bring peace and equality has been met with a myriad of challenges and hurdles, so much so that some feel it is hopeless, a lost cause, but not her. Despite all of the trials and tribulations, Wonder Woman keeps on fighting, using physical force only when necessary; she endures. She is the embodiment of so many qualities we strive for in our day-to-day lives, honor, loyalty, determination, respect, wisdom, and love. Even though she has been bestowed with so many amazing gifts, she still considers herself an equal among her peers. Wonder Woman inspires us all to find the wonder in ourselves.

Benedictine Charity Fashion Show Wows
the Locals!
A taste of fashion with Robert Tonner and Tyler Wentworth

Robert Tonner opened the Tyler Wentworth® couture vaults to treat 150 local ladies to an informal fashion show and presentation to benefit Kingston’s Benedictine Hospital. The Ladies’ Auxiliary turned out in full force to support their hospital, and to view fashions and dolls from the creative mind of Robert Tonner.
During the luncheon, complete with a special silent auction, doll display and goody bags, models strolled amongst the tables in beaded chiffons, embroidered laces, and silk brocades. Many asked later if the clothing could be custom-ordered.
In the end, Robert’s efforts to create a local presence with the area charities and the Chamber of Commerce have certainly helped to build the Tonner name as a benefactor to Ulster County.

Charmed by Duff
Tom Courtney visited Charm City Cakes for Tyler Extravaganza

In the planning of the Tyler’s Tenth Anniversary Luncheon at Wiltwyck Country Club in Kingston, NY (November 7, 2009), we were approached by a very special friend who wanted to contribute something wonderful for the momentous occasion. What would this event be without a great souvenir doll, wonderful food…and a celebratory cake?!
As a fan of Food Network’s Ace of Cakes, our benefactor wanted us to approach Duff Goldman of Charm City Cakes in Baltimore, MD to commission a fabulous cake for the anniversary. I was thrilled to be able to go to Charm City Cakes and meet with Duff and his designers to discuss exactly what would make a visually appealing homage to Tyler in cake form.
No cake hoop skirts on a doll here! The idea for the cake design originated with Robert, and included input for company employees and our fabulous benefactor. An architect friend of mine assisted with a sketch concept to give Duff a visual. Then his designers took it from there.
The final design is a big secret of course…waiting to be unveiled November 7. All in all, the experience was pretty amazing! The Charm City Cake staff was very cordial and friendly…and Duff was as lively and energetic as you see on television.
As I left Charm City Cakes, the aroma of fondant icing lingered in my nose…and a broad smile took over as I relished the memory of meeting the folks there. Boy, I love my job!

You Know You Believe in the Power
of Play® When...
By Kristen de Caccia AKA Almighty Hat

1. You not only use the word 'Frankendolly,' you use it as a verb. Example: "Oh, yes, she's been Frankendollied..."
2. You know that Alene's Tacky Glue has the same texture as marshmallow crème but none of the flavor.
3. Your dolls have their own shampoo and conditioner.
4. Your dolls have their own room.
5. Your dolls have more clothes than you do, and you spend more on clothes for them than clothes for you.
6. You look at #5 and go "Well, there are more of them than there are of me," and/or "If I could fit those pants I'd buy 'em for me, too!"
7. You own a dremel tool, but you have no idea how you might use it for home improvement.
8. You purchased and learned to use a digital camera and an image hosting service just so you could share photos of your dolls online.
9. In addition to your personal blog, you have a blog that is exclusively about dolls.
10. Instead of having a personal blog, you have a blog that is exclusively about dolls.
11. Your significant other, who has no interest in dolls, knows as much as you do about Matt and Tyler's upcoming wedding.
12. You can convert to 1:4 scale in your head, but need to pull out a pocket calculator to figure out how much to tip your waitress.
13. The first time your significant other, who has no interest in dolls, could spot the difference between a Tyler and a Sydney on sight, you praised him or her like a two-year-old who had just successfully used the potty.
14. The term 'Holy Grail' does not make you think of Jesus Christ, King Arthur, Indiana Jones, Dan Brown, Monty Python, or any form of drinking vessel whatsoever.
15. You understand that a doll, despite being a vinyl plaything sturdy enough for children old enough not to put things in their mouths, can retain more value over time if it is left pristine in its original costume and never actually played with. You also understand that a doll that has had all of its factory paint stripped and replaced with paint purchased at the local craft store can suddenly command six times its MSRP, much less its secondary market value. You do not see this as a paradox.
16. You possess the skill to make turned leather gloves for a doll with a hand all of an inch long, with a hair's breadth of a seam allowance; you use antique kid leather to do this and do not feel the least twinge of trepidation cutting into an opera glove older than you are. However, you find the idea of making simple rod-pocket curtains on a sewing machine intimidating.
17. Target, Wal-Mart, Ross, Tuesday Morning, Marshall's, Cost Plus, Pier 1, Michaels, JoAnn, even Home Depot-- you go in and you find yourself picking up an item and wondering if it could be used for dolls somehow.

Gone With The Wind: An American Legend
In its 70th Anniversary, a look at Hollywood’s most beloved classic…

Gone With The Wind rests in the hearts of many fans of cinema. When the book was released, America found itself swept into the deep and engrossing story of two families forever changed by the American Civil War. At the heart of the story, the determined drive of Scarlett O’Hara caustically brushed against those around her as they watch a young, spoiled girl transformed into a woman that stops at nothing to ensure her own survival and the endurance of the memories built by her late parents. When it came to re-tell the story on the silver screen, David O. Selznick knew he must find the perfect actress to re-create the part, and the search to find his Scarlett would become one of the greatest casting searches in the history of Hollywood. When the role settled with Vivien Leigh, Hollywood was still abuzz with the various screen tests, the open casting calls, and the scandals associated with Selznick’s search. The performance as we know it today is legendary; but can you imagine any other actress who could have brought the character to life such as Vivien Leigh did?
Let’s take a flashback into the old days of Hollywood. The perfect Scarlett might have been Bette Davis. But Warner Bros. offered her in addition to Errol Flynn as Rhett Butler, and the public had overwhelming opinion that Clark Gable was the only choice for Rhett. Although other actors were considered for the Butler role, Selznick narrowed his focus to ensure he could secure Gable in the part. Some feel that the Bette Davis film, Jezebel, was made in retaliation to Davis’ loss of the part (of which the public felt Bette Davis was one of the contenders), but it’s difficult to accurately verify this rumor.
Without a question, the two leading considerations for Scarlett were Norma Shearer and Paulette Goddard. Shearer had little interest in Scarlett, and others had stated her to be too old for the part. Goddard tested well, and David Selznick seriously considered offering her the role, but being Selznick’s next door neighbor and living out of wedlock with Charlie Chaplain had their own damaging consequences. It wasn’t long before Selznick dropped her from the running. Even today, one cannot watch the film The Women, without thinking of all the Scarlett hopefuls under the direction of George Cukor, who was replaced on GWTW by Victor Fleming.
There were many, many others you could see in the role. Think of a young Lana Turner (who was the most age-appropriate)…or even Lucille Ball (who, after a disastrous reading for the part, would return many years later to purchase Selznick’s studio and move into his office with Desilu Productions).
When it came to be Vivien Leigh’s turn, she was already signed with Selznick’s brother, Myron, as her agent. Some say that his private talks with David had already placed her in the role while the search continued, and that the famous burning of Atlanta scene where Selznick ‘discovered’ Leigh, was a publicity stunt. But in the end, she is the choice that remains in our hearts today. Few can even admit to seeing anyone else in the role. It was a role that would consume Leigh, and her physical and mental health would suffer. Nevertheless, we will always have her immortal performance to remember whenever we think ‘tomorrow is another day.’

“A Day in the Life”
Miss Nancy
Executive Assistant and Event Coordinator

9am – Another day at work… This is my 13th year working for Tonner Doll! I am still waiting for spring although we had snowflakes yesterday. Did I mention I am SO ready for spring!?
9:45am – Robert buzzed and asked me to take a look at his printer; its got a paper jam (again). All fixed! (Though I don’t really tell him how to fix it – job security you knowJ).
10:15am – I signed another attendee up for convention (we’re almost sold out!). Everyone is getting excited for this convention. We have lots of surprises and goodies planned. Reminder to self: find some cool pajamas for the PJ party!
11am – Made an appointment for Robert to do a phone interview for a magazine article.
Noon – Caught up on email. I got an email from my friend Judy – she’s at the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, GA and I’m SO jealous. She got some great pictures of Tiger Woods – up close! Yes, I’m a Tiger groupie J.
12:30pm – Lunch break!! I called both sons to find out how my new grandbabies are doing (both my sons just had sons- I already love spoiling them!).
1:30pm – Worked on convention agenda and answered some emails about the convention.
3pm – Convention meeting with Robert, Joe and Tom – we finalized the agenda and seminars.
4pm – MORE emails!! I helped Robert with another computer problem… Formatting a document (again, I DON’T tell him how to do it himself – MORE job securityJ).
4:30pm –Kitty is screaming outside my door to the warehouse (she goes out there, and then cries at my door to get back in). This seems to be our 4:30 ritual. Kitty screams, I jump!
5pm – Phone call – another person registers for convention! This will be her first and she’s very excited and I’m excited for her.
5:30pm – Answered MORE email; seems I can never get caught up.
5:45pm – Time to go home!! Another good day at work, and yes… I DO believe in the power of play. J
